Thickness guide

Microns, gauge and what each one is for

In the UK, film thickness is quoted in microns (μm) or gauge. One micron equals four gauge. Thicker is not always better: the right gauge protects your goods without paying for plastic you do not need.

MicronGaugeBest for
50 μm200 gLight, soft items: accessories, socks, small textiles
60 μm240 gMost clothing – the everyday e-commerce standard
70 μm280 gHeavier garments, boxed items, longer journeys
80 μm320 gSharp corners, books, multi-item parcels
100 μm400 gHeavy-duty and bulky items

Not sure? Tell us what you ship and we will include two or three thicknesses in your free sample kit so you can test them. Or work out the weight of any bag with our mailing bag weight calculator.

UK Plastic Packaging Tax

Mailing bags that keep you outside the plastic tax

The UK Plastic Packaging Tax applies to plastic packaging that contains less than 30% recycled plastic. If your business manufactures or imports 10 tonnes or more of plastic packaging in 12 months, you must register with HMRC.

Our 70% recycled mailing bags are well above the 30% threshold, so the tax does not apply to them. We provide the supporting documentation with your order, so you have the evidence HMRC expects.

Ready for April 2027. From 1 April 2027, only post-consumer recycled plastic will count towards the 30% threshold. Our recycled content is post-consumer (PCR), so our bags stay outside the tax after the change.

FAQ

Mailing bag questions

What is the minimum order for mailing bags?

One pallet. You can start with a single trial pallet, mix several sizes, and scale up to full truckloads.

Which mailing bag sizes do you make?

Any size from 8 × 10 cm up to 78 × 110 cm (approx. 3 × 4″ to 31 × 43″), including all standard UK sizes such as 6 × 9″, 10 × 14″, 12 × 16″ and 17 × 24″. We quote in millimetres and inches.

What thickness of mailing bag do I need?

Most clothing ships well in 60 micron (240 gauge) bags. Light accessories can use 50 micron (200 gauge); heavier or sharp-cornered items 70–80 micron (280–320 gauge); bulky items up to 100 micron (400 gauge).

Are your mailing bags subject to the UK Plastic Packaging Tax?

The tax applies to plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled plastic. Our 70% post-consumer recycled mailing bags are above this threshold, including under the post-consumer-only rule from April 2027, and we supply the supporting documentation.

How long does delivery to the UK take?

Orders of 1–2 pallets are produced in around one week and a mixed full truckload in around 10 days. Road transit to the UK takes around 8–10 days; times can vary with customs, port congestion and delivery address.

Do I pay import duty on mailing bags from Türkiye?

Goods of Turkish origin qualify for zero import duty under the UK–Türkiye trade agreement with valid proof of origin, which we supply with every shipment. We deliver DAP; import VAT is payable by the importer as usual.

Can you print our logo on mailing bags?

Yes. We print your logo and design on mailing bags in the sizes and colours you need. Send us your artwork and quantities for a quote.
